The Maypole of Merry Mount. The Maypole of Merry Mount has many different themes. From love, good vs. Puritanism. These themes are alive in many of Hawthornes’s stories. Good vs Evil. The Puritans are the “good” and the people of the Maypole are the “evil”.

But it can also be reversed, because the people of the Maypole are generally fun good people and the “good” Puritans can be considered evil. In the story, there are many sinful, evil things that are going on in the woods. Love. A big theme in the story was love. After the marriage of Edgar and Edith, Endicott threatens the couple. Instead of finding a way out, or begging for freedom, they just stand together as a couple in love.

They show that they will die for each other which gives Endicott hope to let them free. The love between the two was a pure love, which brought them closer together and helped them get through together. Puritanism. John Endicott was the Puritan leader. The Puritans in the story try to forcefully put their ideas, beliefs and morals onto the people of the Maypole. The Puritans go to the extreme. The Puritans try avoid sinning by denying themselves pleasure.
